Online travel agencies have changed the way people plan trips, but the market is far more fragmented than it first appears. A platform that is dominant in Europe may be almost unknown in Southeast Asia, while a regional agency can offer better local payment methods, rail inventory, domestic flights or customer support than a global brand.
This guide brings together major online travel agencies and travel-booking platforms around the world, organized by region. For each company, we include its main location or corporate base, the type of travel it focuses on and its official website. The goal is not to declare one universal winner, but to help travelers understand which platforms are relevant in different markets and what to compare before paying.
Last reviewed: September 2026. Company structures, service availability and booking conditions can change. Always confirm the final price, cancellation rules and supplier details on the platform before payment.

What counts as an online travel agency?
An online travel agency, usually shortened to OTA, lets travelers search and book travel products such as hotels, flights, packages, rental cars or activities. Some platforms act as the booking merchant, while others connect the traveler to a supplier or partner.
Not every travel website works in exactly the same way. KAYAK and Wego, for example, are primarily comparison or metasearch platforms rather than conventional OTAs. Omio specializes in transport booking. Flight Centre combines online booking with human travel advisors and physical stores. We include these platforms because travelers often compare them alongside traditional OTAs.
If you are planning a complete trip rather than comparing agencies, start with our Travel Planning Guide. For accommodation specifically, our cheap hotel search system explains how to compare direct hotel rates with booking platforms.

How to compare two online travel agencies properly
The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest booking. Before choosing between two OTAs, compare the exact same product using the same dates, room type, baggage allowance and cancellation conditions.
- Final price: check taxes, service charges, resort fees and payment fees.
- Cancellation: compare the actual deadline and penalty, not just the word “refundable”.
- Payment timing: some rates charge immediately while others charge at the property.
- Currency: a platform’s converted price can differ from the supplier’s local-currency rate.
- Baggage: flight results that look identical may include different cabin or checked baggage.
- Support: understand whether the OTA or the airline/hotel will handle changes.
- Loyalty benefits: hotel points, elite-night credit or airline benefits may not apply to third-party bookings.
- Package protection: legal protections for package holidays differ by country and booking structure.
For hotel bookings, use our 10-minute hotel deal comparison workflow. If you are mainly comparing airfares, see How to Find Cheap Flights.
When booking directly can be better
An OTA is useful for discovery and comparison, but it is still worth checking the airline, hotel or rail operator’s own website before paying. Direct booking may offer different cancellation rules, loyalty credit, easier communication during disruption or a package that is not displayed on third-party sites.
That does not mean direct booking is always cheaper. The practical approach is to compare the same product and decide which channel gives the best combination of price, flexibility and support. Our guide to booking accommodation in advance versus waiting explains another part of that decision.
Which online travel agency is best?
There is no single OTA that is best in every country or for every trip. Booking.com and Agoda can be strong for accommodation; Expedia and Trip.com cover many travel components; MakeMyTrip, Traveloka and Despegar bring strong regional ecosystems; Omio is useful for European ground transport; and Wego or KAYAK can help compare sellers before you decide where to complete the booking.
A better rule is to use two or three relevant platforms for your market, then check the supplier directly. That gives you enough price comparison without turning every booking into hours of repetitive searching.
Before you pay: a final five-minute check
- Confirm the exact traveler names and dates.
- Read the cancellation and change rules.
- Check baggage or room occupancy carefully.
- Verify the final total in the currency you will actually pay.
- Save the booking confirmation and supplier reference offline.
If the trip is expensive or difficult to replace, also compare travel-insurance cover before departure. Our travel insurance comparison explains the differences between several specialist providers and the questions to ask before buying.
Which booking platforms are worth checking by region?
A traveler in Spain, India or Brazil may see very different prices, payment methods and inventory even when searching for the same destination. Rather than checking every OTA in this directory, start with a small group that is relevant to your departure market and then compare the supplier directly.
| Region or market | Platforms worth comparing | Why they may be useful |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | Booking.com, eDreams, Opodo, lastminute.com, Omio | Strong accommodation, flights, city breaks and European ground transport |
| United States & Canada | Expedia, Priceline, KAYAK, Booking.com | Broad hotel, flight, car and package comparison |
| Latin America | Despegar, Decolar, Almundo, Booking.com | Regional inventory, local payment options and package travel |
| India | MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, Yatra, EaseMyTrip, ixigo | Domestic flights, rail, buses, hotels and India-specific payment flows |
| Southeast Asia | Agoda, Traveloka, tiket.com, Trip.com | Strong regional accommodation, flights, local transport and activities |
| Middle East | Almosafer, Wego, Cleartrip, Booking.com | Arabic-market coverage, regional support and international comparison |
| Africa | Travelstart, Wakanow, Booking.com, Expedia | Regional booking support combined with global inventory |
| Australia & New Zealand | Webjet, Flight Centre, Helloworld, Booking.com | Flights, packages and the option of advisor-assisted booking |
This is a starting point, not a ranking. Availability, pricing and support can change by country, route and date.
Choose the platform type before choosing the brand
Different booking tools solve different problems. A hotel-first OTA is not necessarily the best place to build a complex rail journey, and a flight metasearch engine may be excellent for discovery while sending you somewhere else to complete the payment.
| Your main need | Platform type to compare | Examples from this directory |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and apartments | Accommodation-focused OTA | Booking.com, Agoda, Trip.com |
| Flights plus hotel in one booking | Full-service OTA | Expedia, eDreams, Despegar, MakeMyTrip |
| Compare many sellers before deciding | Metasearch | KAYAK, Wego |
| European trains and buses | Transport platform | Omio |
| Complex flight combinations | Flight-combination platform | Kiwi.com |
| Local rail, bus or domestic transport | Regional travel platform | ixigo, Traveloka, tiket.com |
| Human help with a complicated trip | Hybrid online + advisor agency | Flight Centre, Helloworld, Almundo |
How Hispaads verifies an online travel agency before listing it
A directory is only useful if the companies are real, active and identifiable. Before an agency or platform is included, we check several signals using the company’s own website and corporate information wherever possible.
- Official domain: the website must be identifiable as the company’s own booking or corporate domain.
- Company identity: we look for a legal entity, corporate group, registered office, headquarters or another reliable way to identify who operates the service.
- Current activity: the booking platform must still be operating when the guide is reviewed.
- Service type: we distinguish between an OTA, metasearch engine, transport booking platform and hybrid agency where that distinction matters.
- Geographic relevance: we identify the country or region where the platform is especially relevant rather than assuming every global-looking website serves every market equally.
- Booking clarity: travelers should be able to identify what they are booking, the supplier involved and the conditions before payment.
We do not treat inclusion as a recommendation. The purpose of the directory is to help readers identify legitimate platforms to compare, then make their own booking decision based on price, terms and support.
Booking safety checklist: seven things to verify before paying an OTA
A familiar logo is not enough. Before entering card details, spend a few minutes checking the booking itself.
- Check the exact domain. Type the official address yourself or follow a trusted link. Be cautious with lookalike domains, extra words, spelling changes or unfamiliar subdomains.
- Confirm who takes the payment. The OTA, airline, hotel or another partner may be the merchant shown on your card statement.
- Read the cancellation conditions before checkout. Save the deadline, penalty and any non-refundable wording.
- Verify the supplier reference. For flights or hotels, a supplier confirmation number can be useful if you later need to contact the airline or property directly.
- Check the final currency and amount. Currency conversion and card fees can change the real cost.
- Save the evidence. Keep the confirmation email, booking number, fare or room conditions and screenshots of important terms.
- Check support before you need it. Know whether the platform provides phone, chat, email or in-app support in your market.
For hotel bookings, our hotel deal comparison workflow gives you a structured way to compare the final price and conditions before paying.
If something goes wrong, who should you contact?
The answer depends on the problem and on how the booking was issued. If a flight is cancelled by the airline, the airline controls the flight operation, but an OTA may still control the ticket change or refund process when it issued the ticket. With hotels, the property controls the room itself while the booking platform may control payment or cancellation conditions.
A useful sequence is:
- check the confirmation to see who issued the booking and who charged you;
- contact the OTA when the problem involves payment, cancellation terms or a booking made through its system;
- contact the airline, hotel or other supplier when you need operational information such as check-in, flight status or an on-site issue;
- keep written records of chats, emails, case numbers and refund promises;
- if the problem remains unresolved, check the consumer-protection and payment-dispute options available in your country.
This distinction is one reason the cheapest OTA is not always the easiest option when a trip changes. Support quality and booking control matter as well as price.
What information should a useful OTA comparison include?
When we update this directory, the most useful fields are not promotional slogans. They are practical details that help a traveler decide whether a platform belongs in the comparison set:
- company or platform name;
- main headquarters or operational base;
- main geographic markets;
- booking model: OTA, metasearch, transport platform or hybrid agency;
- main products: flights, hotels, packages, rail, buses, cars, cruises or activities;
- official website;
- date the information was last reviewed.
As this directory grows, new entries will only be added when there is enough information to make the listing genuinely useful. We will avoid creating hundreds of near-empty country pages simply to target search queries.
Found an outdated agency, location or service?
Travel companies merge, rebrand, change headquarters, close regional services and launch new booking products. If you spot something in this guide that is no longer correct, please use our contact page and include the agency name plus the source showing the change. Useful corrections are reviewed before the directory is updated.
Want to compare a real booking? Use our free Travel Booking Toolkit to calculate hotel costs, compare OTA vs direct rates and run a pre-payment checklist.
How this directory is maintained
Hispaads Travel checks this directory against company websites, legal pages, investor information and official corporate material. “Location” refers to the main headquarters, registered office or principal operational base that is most useful for identifying the company; multinational groups can have several legal entities and offices.
We do not rank these agencies from best to worst because suitability depends on the traveler, market, route and product. Inclusion does not mean endorsement. If a company changes ownership, moves its headquarters, closes a service or changes its booking model, the entry will be updated during the next review.
